Isefa (also called “receiving the Hand of Ifá”) is an important rite within the Yoruba religion and the Ifá tradition. It marks a person’s formal connection to Orunmila, the deity of wisdom and divination. During Isefa, a devotee receives sacred objects — most notably a set of consecrated palm nuts (ikin Ifá) that allow them to personally interact with the energy of Ifá and receive guidance for their life path. While Isefa does not make someone a full Babalawo or Iyanifa, (high priest), it provides protection, blessings, and a deeper spiritual relationship with their destiny (ayanmo). It often includes a personal reading (divination) that reveals important taboos, life missions, and spiritual allies. The Hand of Ifá serves as a foundation for further growth, offering the devotee access to wisdom, spiritual protection, and the beginnings of mastery in the Ifá tradition.
